A look at the beautiful city of Vancouver and its famous sites and features.
Help answer the question about Travel
What is the best way to search for ground travel fares, for vacation trips?
I'm considering doing ground travel to a place not too far away from here. Air travel is too expensive (especially since my trip won't be too far into the future) so I'm considering going by train or even by bus (train is preferred.)

How do I go about searching for travel fare? I'm hoping there is a site similar to Priceline or Travelocity that deals with ground travel of this sort.

DETAILS: I'm hoping to travel a round-trip vacation between Portland, Oregon and Calgary, Alberta (Canada, of course). I'll be travelling sometime this month.

Once again, I'm looking for help with finding places to get trainfare (or anything with ground travel) be it a Priceline-similar site or anything. I just need a way to find and compare prices for travelfare. Any hints, ideas, suggestions? Any help is much appreciated!

Imagine this: you wake up in the glamorous, exotic, or rustic location of your choice. A smile sneaks its way onto your face. You’re living your dream of traveling the world… and, here’s the best part – you’re getting paid for it.

It is extremely difficult to write about this subject without sounding ‘hypey’ and ‘salesy,’ so let me just lay out the facts, and I’ll let you come up with your own conclusions:<br />
Hundreds of billions of dollars change hands online every year.

• Thousands of one-man-business entrepreneurs are making a portion of this money.
• Internet technology has made business possible from anywhere in the world. All you need is a laptop or Internet café…
• With a little bit of training and know-how, creating a profitable business online that takes in a few thousand dollars per month takes about 30-90 days.
• There’s a growing underground community whose strategies have them making more money than their friends with ‘Jobs’ and they get to travel to wherever they like.

There are the facts. If you put it all together, there is no reason you can’t take an extremely small piece of the pie. In fact, if you made .00001% of the money being made online you’d be ridiculously rich!

So what are the methods to make this happen? There’s no selling your friends or timeshares or anything shady like that. These are completely legitimate, entrepreneurial ventures that don’t take any startup costs or a ton of training. There are MANY ways to make money online, but here are 3:

1) Sell digital information. If you’re an expert on a subject of any kind, you can quickly and easily create an digitally delivered product and then focus on selling the product online. This can be an ebook, mp3, video file, or even a simple password-protected website. The markup on these products is HUGE because they cost nothing to create or deliver, and they can be sold for $10 to $10,000+ dollars. Say you have a modest $20 download. If you sold a measly 3 products per day, you’re making $1,800 bucks a month. Sell a $50 dollar product (which takes no more work) at the same rate and you’re making $4,500 a month… for doing the work ONCE!

2) Sell stuff on Ebay. “Wait!” I can hear you objecting… “I don’t want to carry around old junk to sell while I travel!” By all means… DON’T! You can easily set up an inexpensive account with a fulfillment house and have them ship your auction sales for you. You can hire a high school kid or your little sister to ship stuff. Better yet, just sell digital products on Ebay and don’t ship anything!

3) Blogging. This is a great option for writers, photographers, and videographers who want to document their travel. You’re probably going to be at least journaling, taking pictures, or video… most likely a combination of all three. Well, did you ever consider making it into a blog that makes money? Setting up a blog to collect income from your advertisers (and visitors, if you choose) is easier than ever. Some bloggers are making $250,000+ per MONTH just for writing about their lives. Yes, you read that correctly. Per month. Not too shabby!

The real key to making money online is to take action and get started. Pick one of these methods, learn as much as you can from experts who have done it already, and then go travel the world!

Once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra, Rajkot was founded by Vibhoji, the younger son of Ajoji. It is the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life. The city, also a former British government headquarters, has a number of impressive colonial buildings and educational institutions. It is famous for silver, textiles and a National weaving institute which promotes traditional weaves. The pleasant town is an important industrial area and a religious centre of the Arya Samaj.

It is best known as the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan or Prime Minister to the king of Saurashtra. Today Rajkot is a city vibrant with business activities and one of the major cities of Gujarat.

Places to see in Rajkot :

Kaba Gandhi No Delo

Kaba Gandhi No Delo is the house where Mahatma Gandhi grew up. It now holds a permanent exhibition of Gandhian items. It is within the old city on Ghee Kanta Road.

Race Course

Race course has various sports facilities like Olympic standard Indoor Stadium, International quality Cricket ground, Football, Hockey & Volleyball grounds, Gym and swimming pool etc. Because of all these attractions, Race Course is the most common place to be visited by the “Rajkotians”. One very interesting fact about Race Course is that it provides an extremely large sitting arrangement of cement benches embedded with the outer border of the ground throughout its periphery, which is rarely seen in any other cities.

Watson Museum and Library

Located in the Jubilee Gardens, the Watson Museum and Library is a memorial dedicated to Colonel James Watson, who was a political agent of Saurashtra from 1886-89. Two imperial lions flank the entrance of the museum. Among the exhibits are copies of artifacts from Mohenjodaro, 13th-century carvings, temple statues, natural history exhibits, and dioramas of local tribal costumes and housing styles.

Alfred School/Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya

When Gandhiji’s father shifted to Rajkot as Diwan of the local ruler, the young Gandhi was sent to Alfred School in the town, now known as Mohandas Gandhi Vidyalaya. The famous incident of Gandhi not copying the spelling of “kettle”, despite his class teacher repeatedly prompting him to do so during the visit of a school inspector, took place here.

Excursions of Rajkot

Five kilometers from Rajkot, is a perfect picnic spot known as Lal Pari Lake and Randerda. The Naulakha Darbagandh Palace famous for its unique architecture is situated forty kilometers from the city in Gondal. About fifty kilometers from the city is the Wankaner palace, which has been turned into a hotel now. Its roman-gothic architecture is very appealing and beautiful. Two-hundred-and-fifty kilometers from the city are Ahmedabad, the capital of the state of Gujarat. 70 KMS from the city, is Jetpur where textile traders from all over the world come into this bustling town for its quality and rates.

Shopping in Rajkot

Rajkot is not yet a major metropolis, but it is has a number of quality malls, where you get all the popular brands. The city has many bazaars exclusively for silverwares and textiles, which are offered at fairly reasonable prices. Make sure to check out the Bandhani sarees, which are made in the city, and are very striking.

Climate

The climate of Rajkot is generally pleasant. The summer season extends from March to June with daytime temperature reaching a high of around 42°C. The monsoons are from July to September. Winter season sets in during October and extends until February. In association with cyclonic storms or depressions in the Arabian Sea in the post-monsoon months, and to a lesser extent in May and June, Rajkot experiences strong winds and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms occur in June and July. In the cold season occasional fog occurs. The summer temperature ranges from 24°C to 42°C and winter temperature ranges from 10°C to 24°C. The average annual rainfall is around 276 mm.

How to get there:

By Air

Indian Airlines connects Rajkot with Bombay and Vayudoot connects Rajkot with Bombay and Kandla. East West Airlines also operate flight from Bombay-Rajkot.

By Rail

Rajkot is a junction on the Western Railway broad gauge line.

Honey, we are going to Paris!

Ah, the joys of preparing for the occasion…

The pleasure of diving into your favorite travel guides (I suggest visiting website Paris-Eiffel-Tower-News.com) to plan out your everyday itinerary… The sheer excitement of stuffing a large suitcase with the entire appropriate garb…

But hold on! Have you thought of leaving enough room in your luggage to bring a few gifts back home?

Bringing back cool gifts. A major important task on your To-Do-When-I’m-There list. Yes, yes, yes. But where will you find nicely original (and attractively inexpensive) stuff?

Well, search no more, I did it for you.

First Gift Opportunity: a Designer Depot

In a previous article I wrote about “designer depots”: small boutiques where it is possible to find vintage or last-season designer garb at very low prices. I like these shops; they are treasures troves where finding a deeply-discounted Chanel suit or Yves Saint Laurent dress is always within the realm of possibilities.

“Chercheminippes” is one of them. The name of the shop is a play on words: it means “searching for clothes” and is a reminder of the street name “Cherche-Midi” (or “searching for noon” in French) where the shop is located.

“Chercheminippes” is not just one shop, but a string of five shops lining the Cherche-Midi Street in the plush 6th district (near the “Sevres-Babylone” metro station, and at walking distance from Saint Germain des Pres). Each shop offers a specific category of items: women’s wear, designer clothes, men’s fashion, child wear, and home decoration.

Every piece of clothing is second-hand but in excellent condition. The owner, Mrs. Bayonne, only buys well-known brands, including French designer brands. She discounts her merchandise by 50% on average.

“Chercheminippes” also offers linen, pens, relatively inexpensive designer jewelry, and various fashion accessories. Unlike traditional designer depot owners, Mrs. Bayonne’s also shops for decorative objects, both contemporary and vintage. There lies more gift potential for you!

Swing by Rue du Cherche-Midi, you will find the five shops tucked between No. 102 and No. 124.

Second Stop on Gift Road

Situated on the ground floor of a private mansion at 9 Place Furstenberg, one of my very favorite places in Paris, “Nolita” carries an unusual assortment of things in a very feminine ‘boudoir’ universe. That prices range from 10 euros to 3,000 euros is an indication of the wide diversity of items on offer. Let’s just say “Nolita” deals in everything that is interior design.

For the shopper looking for singular gifts, the shop presents a vast array of possibilities: linen, tableware, glassware, quaint decorative objects, and even vintage repainted furniture. “Nolita” also carries toiletries, including several lines of soaps. If you are looking for clothing items, the shop may have something for you too.

The owner, Mrs. Lassalle, sources her merchandise from France, Italy and England. Choice and diversity are keywords here, and I think it is unlikely you will leave the shop without a couple of gifts in your shopping bag. I heard “Nolita” is a shopping spot for many American and Japanese travelers.

Place Furstenberg hides between Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the river Seine. You owe it to yourself to discover this quaint area. The closest subway station is Saint-Germain-des-Pres.

The Red Cedar of the Prince Gardener

“Le Cedre Rouge du Prince Jardinier” carries both indoor and outdoor objects. Located at 22 Avenue Victoria, in the very central first district (”Chatelet” subway station), the shop is a cross between the Outpost, Home Depot, Hold Everything, and Williams-Sonoma mail-order catalogues.

There you will find unwieldy by beautiful outdoor furniture made by local craftsmen (tables, lounge chairs and chairs in teak, marble, travertine, and volcanic stone), as well as garden decoration items and tooling (how about a nice red gardener apron and hat? Or a large hemp-fiber bag to carry your groceries in rugged style?).

Fortunately for travelers, “The Red Cedar of the Prince Gardener” also offers more portable indoor objects, including Christmas decorations, a large assortment of perfumed candles and candle-holders, oil lamps, curious plaids and pillows, extraordinary Venetian and vintage glassware, numerous tableware and silverware sets, vases of various shapes and forms, and many other wares of sorts. Even a series of not-seen-elsewhere umbrellas.

I don’t think there is any like shop in Paris. Very unusual, kind of out-of-place, but so interesting it is absolutely worth a visit. And if you fall for a lounge chair or a large fireplace screen, they will ship it to your home. Ask for Patrice, he’s a most helpful fellow.

Well, these are but a few useful boutiques to visit should you plan on bringing something out of the ordinary from Paris for a friend or a relative. I will continue to shop for more of these places, and let you know whenever I find some I like.

Meanwhile, prepare well for your next trip to Paris!
