It's usually best to get your tickets in advance so you can stick to a schedule and not have to worry about the train being sold out and all of that. I would take a train from Paris to London, it would be easiest to find a train from a big city (such as Paris). You're very lucky to be in a study-abroad program, do you like it? Would you recommend it?

"The Portrait of a Lady" by Henry James is set, partially, in Rome. You'll recognize some of the sites that James describes.

"Les Miserables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo are both set in Paris, and the setting is very important to the plot of these novels.

Yes, there are frequent trains. The TGVs take about 5 hours and 10 minutes direct. There are trains every hour. The website for French railways is very complicated and doesn't give results half the time. Supposedly you can buy your ticket online and pick it up at a French train station. Just buy it at the station when you get there, like a day in advance. One way 2nd class costs from $119 to $146 depending on train.
